격변설(catastrophism)
19 세기까지 많은 과학자들은 지구는 불과 수천 년 전에 창조되었다는 사실을 믿고 있었다.
수성론(neptunism): 모든 암석이 원시의 바닷물 속에 침전하여 생성되었다는 학설로 화강암이나 현무암을 수성암이라고 간주한다. 하지만 거의 같은 시대에 화강암현무암을 화성암으로 간주하는 화성설의 출현으로 수성설은 곧 사라지고 말았다. 산이나 계곡과 같은 지구 표면의 모습이 돌발적이고 맹렬한 힘에 의해 일시적으로 형성되었으며 그랜드캐년과 같은 큰 계곡도 일련의 큰 지진에 의해 갑자기 생긴 거대한 틈으로 해석하였다.
